I will post random crap here! Mainly random crap that I find intriguing.

Hey Brad & Dev team,

I remember reading about a sweet feature that was going to be in the GC2 expansions. It was some feature that would conjure up a story for you. This story was generated from the gameplay you experienced and all the stuff that had happened in your game. But, I do remember you guys putting that feature on the back burner because it was becoming complicated or their was some issue, I can't remember why.

I was just wondering if this feature was going to be included into Elemental or perhaps your saving it for GC3? It just seems like it would fit this game well and be a sweet thing to read after you had just finished saving the land..or destroying it.

I am extremely curious about this still after all those months ago when it being mentioned dissapeared. So, any answer would be appreciated and if any one in the community knows please respond as well.

Yeah, I remember that. I think they took it out because it could only generate rough stories rather than interesting ones. I dont think it helped that a buch of people on the GC2 forums were dedicated story AAR writers with alot of creativity and attention to detail that SD probably did not want to try to compete with with computer generated stories. They DID put an event calandar in instead that lists events (like when technologies became available and war declarations) so you could go in and fact check things of your empire should you want.

The good story must bring something new. No generator can do this.

I doubt a computer generated story could bring the same kind of creativity and interest a story written by a person has.  But if they included an event calander with Elemental as well, one that records a variety of information, tech research, battles, victories, defeats, heroes recruited and their advance ment, quests, etc, with filters so that the player can exclude items based on when they occured or the type of event, I think that would be fantastic.

This event log would make a good back bone to write a story off of, and the story writers of the community would probably appreciate it.

Ack...I was hoping that 'feature' of GC2 had been forgotten.

No, we'll not be attempting the Epic Generator for Elemental. It was a hellish ordeal to try and create an interesting, readable story from pure data. After reading 'The Silmarillion', however, I think I have a considerably better idea as to the 'feel' a generated story should have...but yeah, any time spent on a story generator is, in the end, time not spent on the game. ANd right now, we have WAY too many fun features to cram into the game itself to be worrying about post-gameplay features.

BoogieBac, could you consider to add a "notepad" to the game? So I can open it and add whatever information I need to record. And that whenever an event (popup/window/message/globe) appears, it has a button that adds the relevant text of that event to the "notepad". The text file for that game's "notepad" could be edited in and out of the game so the player can add and/or delete as needed.

Also, make sure that Elemental comes by default with a clock so we can know when is too late to go to bed and have to go to work without any sleep.

I think at least a few of us remeber it fondly despite y'all learning that the idea was way too tall an order.

My main hope for Elemental is that it's version of the Events tab will be stronger. GC2 does not track diplomatic events very well, does not identify the source of acquired techs, and it lost the filter functions that were there briefly in the beta.

Wow, that's an excellent idea. And if you don't want to take notes, just ignore the feature. Simple idea that could make empire management much easier.

BoogieBac-

My one takeaway from the failed Epic Story Generator would be to allow the software to at least log events, and then allow the users to filter out that data for posting screenshots/graphs/data later.  Could this at least be included (or maybe it already is)?

I second the idea of an "event log".  I enjoy writing AAR's, but they're a huge pain in the ass to do when I have to notate everything down manually.  An event log would be an extremely useful tool in this regard.

Event log would be a handy tool indeed! The stories will be better if we write them ourselves I feel.

Yes, an even log will be 100x easier to implement than a story generator....and the notes ides should be doable (just add an empty 'Event' wher eyou get to fill in the details...then you even get the timeline of when the note was posted).

Huzzah!  Thanks, Boogie.

Some of us never forget anything.

Well. I think the game should be playable in a window. If so, you may run any text editor you want (without the need of this feature to be present in the game). Logging is however always a good idea. Especially in beta.
